I believe it is time for newness to begin. Our new age will come, enticed or unbidden.
And of what shall that epoch consist?
For starters I was listening to a podcast on Ideas on the CBC and enduring some talk from the radical left. This was about green energy salvation to the problems of the planet, while somehow preserving the middle and working classes. Very optimistic stuff. In short, there are thoughts of waylaying the Bio-pocalypse by by de-coupling our industry from carbon, while maintaining growth and the better parts of our standard of living.
This is very pro-trade Union stuff. I understand. I might like, if it came down to it, to preserve my own future and that of the planet, and the hedonistic standards of my reckless living. But!
If only I had enough faith in humans enough to believe that we could and would do such a thing, okay, I'd buy it. But cynicism remains, just under the scratched skin.
Instead, what choice? Read anything by Chris Hedges - any book at all - and you will see and feel the trumpeted clarion call to arms.
Are any of us young and extreme and committed enough to take on global corporations on whatever scale? When I think about such a possibility, I think about singular futility, getting shot (like, dead) or character assassinated at least. And I believe myself to now be too old, which is certainly a crushing self-imposed hurdle.
Nonetheless I ponder. And thus, you will find me exploring the resultant resonant themes in fiction:
What can we actually do about the future?
What will genuinely happen, despite our best efforts?
What is the cost to our human souls as the world continues to change beyond our understanding and control?
Ultimately, can we emotionally and spiritually endure such suffering?
Yes, it is time for a new age. Let's imagine it, filled with shadows as it seems to be. And let us seek the cracks of light at the same time, and feel the delicate threads of our tenuous hope.
